This is a view of the exhibition where Sugarhead is displayed

The display is about the history of sugar and its links to the slave trade. I tried to create a surreal and nightmarish sculpture to go with this theme, hence the ship contraption on the head. I hope the shocking figure of the sculpture will help draw attention to a period in history that some would rather forget. I am also very pleased with my idea of making the ship a part of the head, so you cant tell where one ends and the other begins. This is something I would like to refine in the future, perhaps with resin or monster clay. It might also be interesting the block out the eyes of the figure. The frame of the ship would cover them, so you would have only the mouth showing, a sort of ‘monstrous ship creature’. This would emulate characters like The Batman who laughts, or The Mouth of Sauron in Return of the Kings. A better idea I have just thought of would be to put the eyes on either side of the ships hull like a fish.
