I have been working more to come up with a unique look for the head. I am really just experimenting with small bits of clay and different tools. I think I might simply leave the eyes as sockets rather than putting eyeballs in them. However, having an eye watching the viewer might be better for Lovecraftian cosmic horror.
The wirey bits on the side of the head are inspired by H R Giger’s Alien. I believe the puppet for the 1979 film was created using hosepipe for the veins and tube like structures that makeup the Alien’s body.
Cthulhu is a monster who first appeared in HP Lovecraft’s 1928 short story, ‘The Call of Cthulhu’. The main character is a man named Francis Weyland Thurston. The story tells of his investigations into a mysterious cult. In the Cthulhu Mythos, the Earth was once populated a race of gods known as the Great Old Ones, including Cthulhu. But their reign came to an end and Cthulhu was placed in a deep sleep beneath the ocean. The cult worships him in horrific rituals so that he will awake from his sleep and come to rule the world again.
I am using the technique of shaping the clay with a tool and then smoothing it out with Vaseline. I made holes in the skin using the tool shown, and then smooth it down with some Vaseline on my fingers. The end result gives the more natural looking impression of pores.
Make sure you heat up the chavant clay before you use it. This will make it a lot easier to sculpt.
