Needs to be More Doll Like
I have nearly finished my Harry Clarke inspired artwork. My favorite elements of the this work are the wavy Japanese style patterns and the female face at the top. I am not so pleased with the figures.
I think the problem is that I have tried to make them too photo realistic. I am not good enough at the moment to do photorealism in pen. Photorealism needs to be perfect in order to look good. I think I need to do what Clarke did, which is to make the figures more fantastical, and more doll like. And I think in some aspects of the drawing I have tried to be too clever. With the mechanical pattern and the flowers I tried to come with a lot of original designs. I wanted to come up with new ideas for levers, cogs, wheels, petals, buds and stems.
However I am also pleased with my use of dark spaces. I like the contrast between the nothingness and the wavy Japanese style patterns. I also like the flowers on the lower half of the artwork. I like the contrast between the fine detail and the monochrome spaces of the the rest of the drawing. I also think with even more detail the mechanical pattern at the top of the artwork can be made to look good. Actually, I think this might be the case with the figures aswell. The more detail I add, the more visually interesting they will become.
