Getting the Nightmare Inked
I have nearly finished this drawing. I have started applying the ink and I am just working out the intensity. For two patches of black, I used two different types of pen. I think with the one I used on the left hand edge, the intensity of the ink is greater. It is this type I will use for the large patches black.
I like how the concept is crystalizing. I want the whole thing to have a dreamlike quality; lots of shapes and figures existing along side each other, in ways they never do in real life. I also want this scene to be reminiscent of a large manor house. It has to feel like the kind of place a murder would take place in a detective novel; there is a bookshelf on the right edge; there are curved shapes that look a bit like curtains at the top; the tall shapes with the skull faces on the left look like grandfather clocks. What I’m looking for is sort of….the essence of a detective novel rather than being too direct – without having a drawing of a detective stooping over a body. What would a detective novel look like if it were a dream.
It also has to look like the woman in the centre is in the middle of a nightmare. The man who is holding a knife to her throat has to look insane. But I think I have made him look too malevolent. I want him to look scared aswell as dangerous; as if he has been driven insane by the nightmare. He too is a victim of this evil. I want him to look desperate and yet terrifying. His eyes are looking to the side, rather than his victim, as if he too is scared of these horrific visions. Don’t know about you, but I find something extra scary about someone being a victim of evil, and consequently becoming a perpetrator of that same evil.
