The hands looked very undersized previously, but I have made the fingers look more grasping and spider like. I have also added the detail of the sinews on the feet. I think soon I will stop trying to get the details right. I will call it finished. Then I will glue up the edges of the cardboard, making sure they a properly sealed to the base. This has to be done so that the two halves of the plaster mould don’t flow into each other. The head is still over sized but that cant really be helped at this stage.
The writing on the base is to enhance the supernatural feel of the sculpture. I want there to be something ritualistic about this piece, as if it plays a part in some occult ceremony. The writing idea came straight from Lovecraft. He often makes reference to ancient societies in his work. The writing is not in any real language. I just made it up. Another important inspiration was the language of Deadric in Bethesda’s 2011 video game The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim. This language can often be seen carved on stone structures that the player explores. I have also found that bizarre and fantastical runes make the product more likely to sell at my face to face markets. This is particularly true of the Stalls From the Crypt Market. As a matter of fact I think it will prove to be true on any halloween market, as a opposed to a regular craft market.
When doing the fingers I referred to a concept art book for Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The concept art for the army of the dead gave me an idea of the shapes I needed to create. I am not sure this has come across in the final sculpture but it got me some of the way there.
