A I isn’t art
Submitted yesterday for the Cass Art Prize. Creatives need to spend a lot more time making it clear that A I isn’t art. My intention is to mock companies and individuals who use digital brains to steal artists work. In the middle of the painting is an ‘artist’ who is using a computer to scan artworks created by others. At the side of the bed is a robot who has burgled an art gallery and stolen a painting for him. The artist orders him to put it in the safe behind him. I wanted the artist to look like a drug addict, as if he hasn’t even left this messy, squalid room in years and has no intention of doing so. That’s why he has wires going into his body. I also wanted to go into as much detail as possible and use my drawing skills as much as I possibly could. One thing I took a lot of time over was getting the ‘artists’ face right. Initially I had him looking a lot more evil and malicious, but I decided to narrow the eyes and change the smile to make him look more stupid and lazy. My favorite part of this piece is the robot. I love how I have done the shine of his metallic body and I think the mask makes him look terrifying. I wanted to use proper human skill to show up the theft of artists work that has become possible with the perfection of Artificial Intelligence. AI is not just another tool doing that the artist uses. Its actually a different brain doing the work for him. It scans the works of other artists and uses the information to create a new image without the artists consent.
